About the Word-a-lizer

(What this thing is all about, and how it got started)

    What is it?

The word-a-lizer was inspired by Rhymex, which was something I ran across when I was searching for something to write about (a subject or topic). I typed "writer's block" into Google, and voila! Instant inspiration. I kindly gave credit to Miles at Rhymex for the idea, and hoped that I wasn't infringing on any rights he had. I don't think I am since I am not gaining anything from the word-a-lizer other than having evidence that people are actually submitting words.

    Why did you start it?

I decided that I wanted something similar to the Rhymex clock on my site. I thought it would be a good reader participation project if I allowed people to send in words they would like to see added. Unfortunately, it would not be wise to let the words be added instantly, due to the script being extremely character sensitive and to prevent undesirable words from showing up. Since I have very limited talent using Macromedia Flash, I recruited my friend, Tim to find the program script information needed to make my project successful. I set to the task of creating the graphics needed to give it a user-friendly interface. I knew what I wanted it to look like - and I knew what I wanted it to do, I just had no clue about what I needed in order for it to work.

So, what is it good for?

When it first started, it was mainly a conversation piece. Then a few days later, Miles (from Rhymex) visited and signed the guestbook. To my knowlege, he has contributed around fifteen to twenty words to the project. Eventually, Deb of definitely Deb began to send me groups of words that she received in sequence that are amusing or somehow related. This evolved into the challenge of actually writing a short story that uses the three words, and hopefully amuse readers at the same time. That is why this page has been created.

    How do I play?

On this page, you will find stories submitted by other people. I wish I could just have stories appear instantaneously, however, I have a wide range of audience members and have chosen to take the route of mild censorship. Pretty much any submitted story will be used, with the exception of extreme erotica. (Your mother reads this site).

    What are the rules?

Be honest about the three words. It is more challenging, and not to mention more fun if you actually received the three words in a row.. The used words do not have to be the first three you get from word-a-lizer. You may click the button as many times as needed to get three words you actually want to write about. (This was added in due to the fact that sometimes the words displayed just do not inspire you to write.) Remember though, the words have to display in sequence. You can use the three words in any manner you see fit, as long as they are used properly for their meaning. They can appear in your story in any order necessary. This means that they need not be used in the order that you received them. If you get a word that is not familiar to you, and not in the dictionary, start your story with a definition (using any definition you wish) at the top. Then use it accordingly. These submissions will probably be among the most fun for other readers, and especially for the person who originally submitted the word to see how the word was used and the new meaning it has been given. Please enter the name you wish to appear with your story in the e-mail form. If you leave your e-mail address, you will receive an automated response indicating that the e-mail was sent properly. If you wish to receive further mail, informing you that your story has been published please leave the necessary information. If you submit regularly, you might even be invited to join the weblog group, where you will be able to post your stories directly to the site.

    What do these words mean?

Some of them are ficticious... some are really words. Check out the glossary (work in progress as I add words)

What changes can I expect to see to the word-a-lizer in the future?

    Possibly a new face plate!
